I have never read a book of Eoin Colfer’s that didn’t impress me; his characters, his wit, and his plots are always excellent. The Artemis Fowl series, however, is Colfer at his best. The story begins with Artemis, a 12 year old Irish millionaire with a genius for crime, ruthlessly pursuing his plot to steal fairy gold. Helping Artemis is his bodyguard, Butler, who is possibly my favorite fictional character of all time. Fighting, cooking, obtaining false papers–you name it, Butler is on top of it. Together, these two kidnap a fairy to hold for ransom. Unfortunately for them, the fairy they capture is Captain Holly Short, of the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance squad (that’s LEPrecon for short). Holly has a few tricks of her own up her sleeve (or down her boot). Nor are Holly’s friends back at LEP headquarters to be overlooked. Foaly, the wisecracking centaur, commands technology that’s decades ahead of any competition, and Julius Root, the politically incorrect LEP commander, will stop time itself to get his officer back. So are they too much for Artemis? He doesn’t think so. With combatants like this, there’s no predicting what will happen. And the series only gets better from here!

People who say it’s blasphemy are ignorant about this subject, because it is not a new concept. It’s one that just reiterates our connective-ness as human beings. The wonderful thing about this scooter is its speed! I have had one (mag) for about 6 months, and it has greatly added to the enjoyment in my life. It is so much fun to kick off & glide for a VERY LONG time. I have a bit of arthritis in my hip and it turns out that the kicking motion is exactly what is recommended to stimulate the cartilage to grow but not be bad for the hip. (The exercise it mimics is standing on a book with one foot, holding on to a chair, and swinging the other leg back and forth–exactly the scooter motion!!) One can ride the scooter & accompany a person who is walking on the sidewalk, or zip off to do errands. The only time I had serious trouble is when I went up a rounded curve at an angle THROUGH A PUDDLE. I was thrown to the ground, but was well protected by my helmet–the variety for skate boarders–which I recommend xooter riders get. (These helmets are designed to protect all sides of the head.) I now walk my scooter around ALL puddles. Other than that one incident–it has been pure pleasure.

I must admit, I wish that I read this book for the first time while I was in high school. It would have been a great book to read in school, too – I definitely would have preferred to read this over some of the other assigned books. It would have been a lot of fun to discuss. And it really is amazing just how timeless this book is, I mean, for the most part, it feels like this could have been published this year. It just feels very fresh and modern, which I suppose is one of the tell-tale signs of a true classic novel. I didn’t really know what to expect from the book, and I did really enjoy reading it. I will say, though, I read somewhere that there is a window of opportunity to read this book, and that if you read it when too young, or too old, you lose the book’s full power, and I can definitely see how that statement is true. Still, Holden Caulfield is a great character, but I would have liked him even more if I had been introduced to him at a younger age.
