Received the Kindle while I have been in Afghanistan. Great product for keeping a number of books on hand with the limited space I have in my rucksack. With an M-Edge leather cover it has survived a fair amunt of abuse without so much as a scratch.
The download process via computer is pretty easy when I have access but is often restricted by policies in effect on different computers in theater.
The battery life is great. Since there is no compatible wireless in the area I’m in,I leave it turned off most of the time.
I was home on leave and used the 3G coverage in Colorado Springs for e-mail and a download. Work well and I did indeed receive the product purchased in about 1-3 minutes.
The E-Ink panel has taken some abuse and is a glare problem only in a very few positions during high light conditions. I find this panel vastly superior to any backlit color screen I have ever loked at in terms of eyestrain. I don’t think I could ever read as well on my laptop or even something like the iPad.
Overall this is an awesome product. I love being able to put in notes for later reference. I love the simplicity of the design which I believe adds to its durability.
The only gripe I have is the cost of publications and the new pricing scheme should help alleviate that issue soon. The move to digital readers may help reform the publishing process to put more of the focus on the author and the editor than on the houses and their bulky, expensive infrastructure. Hoperfully there will still be a level of quality control in the industry, a decline in which may also be precipitated by the move to a new format that will increasingly focs on volume sales.
