It’s easy to see why girls are hooked on Twilight. Really, it’s a great escape type read. And I liked all the books in the series except the last one (major disappointment). So while I loved Twilight and New Moon and Eclipse, and loved the movies, I do have to say that I cringe when I think of teen girls reading it and thinking it’s a great example of a love relationship. The feminist in me just wants to shout at Bella that she’s in a completely unhealthy relationship. She loses her own identity because she’s so obsessed with Edward. And while I like lots of characteristics of Edward, he’s absolutely too controlling. Overall, I would never want my daughter to be so crazy for a guy that she let her world revolve around him. Also, I thought that Bella’s obsession with becoming a vampire got to be a little annoying. It seemed like her family meant nothing to her, becoming a vampire was just everything to her. Even more than what Edward wanted for her. I sort of thought that being beautiful and strong was so appealing to her, that what she was giving up didn’t matter at all. That was disappointing. I would have liked to see her struggle with that more than she did.

So while it’s a fun read and I do recommend it for light reading–I also definitely want to have a disclaimer saying “Remember, it’s fantasy! No girl should EVER let a boy control your life or make you feel basically suicidal if you’re not together.”

I started using this bean-bag friction mount when I bought my first serious Garmin GPS (the 2720) and continued to use it on my subsequent Garmin GPS units (2830, nuvi 350, 750, 285, 500, etc.). It worked but it wasn’t perfect for my needs.

I travel often and needed a mount that I could put in my briefcase and although I could with this one there were a few drawbacks:

* Since it is full of lead-shot it showed up as a dark mass when I sent my bag through the scanners at airports and they had to manually search my bag unless I took it out first

* The mounting arm and bracket has to be taken off of the mount before storing in a bag (the little pieces tended to move around in my briefcase making them hard to find). Not a big deal unless you are looking for them at night while standing in the cold or rain at the rental car lot

* I found that it was not very stable when used in certain vehicles (I rent all kinds of cars on my trips, most were fine, some weren’t)

When Garmin came out with their flexible friction mount I bought one right away. I found that I could fold it flat without taking the arm or the bracket off; it is lighter and has no lead shot so it was not a problem at airports; since it conforms to the dash it works better for me on a wide variety of cars and SUVs.

Some people will like this one better and some will prefer the other one, either way they are both good units and you should be happy with whichever one that you chose.

BMX Mongoose Bike suck

Packaging terrible, bike decent.. I read the other reviews before buying, so I was aware of the packaging complaints. But, like others who wrote, my son really wanted THIS bike, and I needed to have Mongoose BMX Bike quickly for his birthday in January. I’ve had good experience with Amazon before, and so I took the risk. I mean, what were the chances of it happening to me too?

Quite high as it turns out. The bike arrive on time in a box that was virtually destroyed. Both sides had been punched through and repaired with yards of clear packing tape somewhere along the way. Some small parts inside the box may have been lost. We haven’t tried to assemble the bike yet, so I don’t know if we have everything we need. The frame and wheels look undamaged so we may be OK.

The large panels on the box need to be reinforced or padded so that the frame of the bike doesn’t punch through during loading, transport and storage. I have never in my life had any item arrive with packing in that condition. It was almost comical – except that it was a $100+ dollar item that is difficult to return.

So buyer beware. Until the packaging problem is addressed, you’re really rolling the dice on what condition the bike will be in upon arrival.
