I have never read a book of Eoin Colfer’s that didn’t impress me; his characters, his wit, and his plots are always excellent. The Artemis Fowl series, however, is Colfer at his best. The story begins with Artemis, a 12 year old Irish millionaire with a genius for crime, ruthlessly pursuing his plot to steal fairy gold. Helping Artemis is his bodyguard, Butler, who is possibly my favorite fictional character of all time. Fighting, cooking, obtaining false papers–you name it, Butler is on top of it. Together, these two kidnap a fairy to hold for ransom. Unfortunately for them, the fairy they capture is Captain Holly Short, of the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance squad (that’s LEPrecon for short). Holly has a few tricks of her own up her sleeve (or down her boot). Nor are Holly’s friends back at LEP headquarters to be overlooked. Foaly, the wisecracking centaur, commands technology that’s decades ahead of any competition, and Julius Root, the politically incorrect LEP commander, will stop time itself to get his officer back. So are they too much for Artemis? He doesn’t think so. With combatants like this, there’s no predicting what will happen. And the series only gets better from here!

This book was taunting me for weeks, “BUY ME! BUY ME!” I read about it online, I read the book jacket. I thought I can’t wait to read this. There was just one hitch, The Help is still in hardcover. I rarely buy hardcovers unless they are deeply discounted. I always wait for the paperback because it is so much cheaper. I saw the hardcover for 30% off at Borders, and kept saying in my head, “Resist temptation! Resist temptation!” I did resist, but that same day at Target I saw that book for 30% off and other books deeply discounted. Needless to say, I went into Target for lotion and came out with lotion and four more books, including The Help!!! I don’t know about the rest of you but it is very hard to pass up books.

The Help takes place in 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi. It’s told from three different points of view. Aibileen is a wise black maid, helping raise yet another white child. Minny is her wise-cracking friend, who is also a maid. Minny’s mouth has gotten her in trouble more times than she can count. Now both of them take a huge risk to help a white woman, Skeeter Phelan, with a seemingly impossible task – let the world know what it’s really like to live and work during the civil rights era.

Aibileen works for Elizabeth Leefolt, cooking, cleaning and serving as a surrogate mother to her daughter Mae Mobley. She bites back her tongue as Miss Leefolt and her friend Hilly Holbrook talk about race relations in Jackson. Miss Hilly is one of those people who believed black people were oozing with diseases. It’s Miss Hilly who convinces Miss Leefolt to build a separate bathroom in the garage for Aibileen, so she can’t infect the Leefolt family.

After being blackballed by Miss Hilly, Minny finally has a new job as a maid for the seemingly crazy Miss Celia. Minny works under secrecy because Celia would rather let her husband, Johnny, believe that all she’s doing all of the cooking and cleaning. It leads to some rather hilarious episodes. This book arrived less than a week from the day ordered. It is very engrossing, can hardly put it down, as it reviews attitudes towards black and white people in the early 1960’s. (After all the Civil Rights activities is is hard to remember the old days.) Stockett makes her characters, black and white, believable and honest in their daily lives and their reactions to events going on around them, i.e. murder and maiming of black men, all the rules the Negro must abide by, fear of being seen with a member of the other race, the degrading circumstances the blacks had to live in. I’m not quite finished with it, but hope that improvements will be made for the black people in the story. Probably there won’t be many improvements for the black people until some of the white women are knocked up side of the head.

I have a newer vehicle with a curvy dashboard and this fits very well and does not move at all while driving. It is just the right size and easy to conceal when leaving your vehicle. This pedometer is accurate,but the large clip causes the pedometer to stick out 1 1/2 inches away from the body. Not cool under a fitted T shirt. The safty clip couldn’t be pried open with a sturdy butter knife. Usless,so I threw it away and use a small safety pin. Pocket only pedometer.

I was also concerned with the quality of this card. After waiting over a month for my high def camera to arrive I found the card did not work. Amazon’s policy makes it difficult to return after the return for expires(4 weeks?). Other cards may work fine but check them out fast to avoid wasting your mony as I did. I will find some where ele to buy memeory with a more friendly return polocy for non working items.
