I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. I loved the movie, but as usual, the book is even better. I do not have much time to read, but I listen to plenty of audio books in the car, the shower, and bed. This one was really hard to turn off. Even though I had seen the movie, it still kept me on the edge of my seat!

The depth of the characters and their voices hold you while reading this book. I’m generally a non-fiction reader but this author writes so beautifully that I felt I was watching a movie. The range of emotions that the characters experience flowed to me as the reader. Some situations made me uncomfortable for the characters…now THAT’S a well-written piece.
I highly recommend spending a few hours with this cast.

We’ve been using Office XP for way too long, but it did everything we needed it to do so there was no reason to upgrade.
When my wife got a new laptop, some of the software she uses under Windows 7 wouldn’t work with Office XP, and we were forced to bite the bullet and upgrade to the current version. And it honestly isn’t bad! Very different coming from something so old, but there are a lot of improvements that make it worthwhile.
I’m not crazy about how Microsoft changed around it’s various licensing schemes and the cost of upgrading, but the Home and Student version hits the sweet spot of giving us what we needed without too extreme a cost.
If you only need the basic applications in Office, and it’s time to upgrade, this package is definitely worth a look.

Handel s Water Music series
I listened to the Opal Deception on a Coast-to-Coast drive with my daughter. We laughed across Arizona and I was hooked on Artemis Fowl. If you are an adult who likes Harry Potter there is a good chance you will like Artemis too. There is a natural tendency to compare them and to my taste Artemis is lighter and funnier. The prose is first-rate, the plots move right along and the characters are just a delight.

I am well pleased with my new Kindle Reader. Now that I have my burgundy cover it feels much more like a real book and is easier held and read. Ease of adding books is a huge plus and the battery holds its charge for several days of use.

I will keep this short since this review will disappear among the thousands very shortly, and I’m sure everything has probably been said by now.
But, here is a quick summary of my findings. I bought the Kindle 2 (first time e-reader user) to read technical computer science books, conference papers, and other materials. I wanted good support for PDFs, since conference papers are almost entirely in those and I have a few textbooks that way as well.
For conference papers, the Kindle is not my favorite device. I will probably read them on a laptop or print them, which is what I was trying to avoid with a Kindle. Converting the PDF to Kindle format works, but it’s not always pretty. It’s hard to follow the organization of how the text is converted (from the two column paper format and such), and graphs and other items generally disappear. It’s possible to view the PDF natively without conversion, but the text is quite small and it isn’t very readable (cannot increase text size or zoom or anything with native PDF currently).
But, for other documents, I have found the Kindle useful. Computer Science textbooks generally work out ok, except some formatting for sample code isn’t always nice. Depending on what type of material is being read, this may be ok. I stick to security textbooks often so there is little code to work with and more discussion on concepts.
Overall, it’s a 4/5 star product. It did take time to get used to though and figure out the “best” way to use it for myself. The cursor moves slowly and is choppy sometimes, but you don’t need to use it too often. The native PDF works, but I have been converting them anyways since it works better. With the free mobipocket creator, you can convert a PDF file to Kindle format and add a table of contents pretty easily (this is very useful for textbooks and navigating).
So, it doesn’t work perfectly and there is still room for improvement, but I’m definitel keeping it and will get good use out of it.

A great read from Amazon’s used book rack Water for Elephants: A Novelthat had me hooked from Chapter 1. Ms Gruen nails the times and personages that inhabit her novel dead on. …and the twists and turns are very enjoyable as well. I could personally relate to the circus atmosphere in the depression 30’s as those were the carnies that visited my home town in northern New Jersey.
